New Roundabouts to Open in Yadkin County This Week YADKINVILLE – N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will shift drivers to a new traffic pattern on South State Street (U.S. 601) this weekend as a project to improve safety, congestion, and utilities near U.S. 421 continues. Crews from Blythe Construction, of Charlotte, will begin installing new pavement markings and removing existing traffic signals at the U.S. 601 and U.S. 421 interchanges at 8 p.m. Friday, weather permitting. The U.S. 421 ramps and U.S. 601 near the overpass will close intermittently throughout the night as crews finish installing pavement markings. Crews will shift traffic into a roundabout pattern at the U.S. 601/U.S. 421 interchange before 7 a.m. Saturday, once the pavement markings are installed and the existing signals have been removed. Message boards have been installed alerting drivers to the upcoming operation and traffic pattern change. Flaggers and law enforcement officers will direct traffic throughout the night Friday, and drivers will follow signed detours around the closure using Unifi Industrial Drive and U.S. 421. Drivers should follow posted signage, obey instructions from flaggers and law enforcement, and avoid distracted driving. When navigating a roundabout, drivers should remember these directions:
The $19.8 million contract includes four roundabouts and a new median, improved intersections and upgraded storm water and utilities on U.S. 601 between Sharon Drive and Lee Avenue. The four roundabouts are designed to ease congestion at the U.S. 421 ramps and the intersections with Maple Street and Lee Avenue, with a new median will separating north and south traffic. |
